The village was created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in 1925 and was finalised in 1976. It was designed to highlight how a landscapes natural beauty could be retained, and even enhanced, with careful, sympathetic architecture. Drawing on Mediterranean inspiration, the artful village has been meticulously crafted by a number of talented architechts to incorporate colourful and ornate baroque structures, destined for destruction, into the stunning landscape of North Wales – making Portmeirion the perfect “home for fallen buildings”.
